What’s the difference between a Sound Bath, Sound Journey, and Sound Ceremony?

You may have heard me talk about the differences between a Sound Bath, a Sound Journey & a Sound Ceremony. Well, tomorrow we are going deep into the subtle architecture that goes into crafting a truly transformational Sound Journey. This is one of the master keys for how I create my ceremonies & I have never heard of anyone else teaching this specifically for Sound Healing Ceremonies.

Sound Baths are more blissful & relaxing

Sound Baths are an easy space to be in and require little to no preparation for the participants. Often attendees are encouraged to begin lying down right away, and sometimes the instruments are already being played in the background as people come in.

Perhaps there is some light breathwork and maybe a short meditation to start, but the experience is mostly Sound, with little to set the container or frame the experience. The Sound Sath is usually a shorter experience and often complete with participant still lying down and they are encouraged to take their time getting up, similar to a massage.

The fact is that there are many Sound Healers out there who just got some sound healing instruments on Amazon or have been gathering them over the years, and just started putting themselves out there and offering ceremonies – and in some ways that’s okay.

It’s very true that Sound Healing instruments are intuitive to use – but you can ALWAYS tell when someone is just figuring things out on their own, or when they’ve had some form of real training where they’ve learned how to hold a safe ceremonial space and how to efficiently & effectively move energy with specific sounds.

A Sound Journey is more complex

Here there is a specific architecture and order to the experience – certain types of sounds are played at certain moments throughout the journey to move the energy in different ways – and there are very distinct sections of the experience (that if navigated well, are imperceptible to the participants).

The journey usually begins with everyone seated, with a grounding meditation and specific intention or focus for the journey. Participants are invited to join in the process of constructing a safe container for themselves by calling in guides or building an energetic structure to hold themselves for the journey. Even the process & timing of when they transition from seated to lying down is part of the transformational structure of the journey.

A Sound Journey is a deeply alchemical space where profound healing can occur – that may or may not be comfortable or blissful in the moment, but can have lasting beneficial healing effects. Sometimes some of the sounds are even intentionally disturbing or strange in order to dislodge stuck energy patterns. This is always followed by soothing, reassuring sounds to support the process. At the end, everyone is guided to return to a seated position together, and the container is closed with intention. Afterwards integration support is offered.

A Sound Ceremony is a fully immersive experience.

A Sound Healing Ceremony has all the attributes of a Sound Journey in that it has a similar architecture that guides participants through a transformational journey, but it is much more sensorially immersive. In addition to Sound, there is also a visual aesthetic that is intended to set the scene as an immersive transformational space (the yoga studio is no longer a normal studio space, but has transformed into an ancient temple space).

This visual component transports participants to a place that is outside of their “normal” reality. This supports them in loosening their grip on what they expect to happen and expanding the possibilities of what can happen (miraculous healing on all levels).

A Sound Ceremony engages all the senses on multiple levels – from the visuals to the essential oils or other aromas that are used – and participants are encouraged to use their hands to create some kind of altar.

There is often some type of sharing of information or discourse to call forward particular concepts & ideas to help set the scene for the focus of the journey. Sometimes there is a ritual component to the experience to further engage the senses and encourage participants to dig deeper about what they are intending to clear/release or amplify/expand through the ceremony.

The Ceremony completes with everyone seated together, releasing the energetic architecture that was created, and dedicating all that was experienced towards the liberation of all beings.

These are just some of my personal reflections on different ways of holding space and working with Sound Medicine over the past 8 years. Again – one is not better than the other. All have pros & cons.

I have done all of these formats at one time or another and have seen benefits in all of them. But for myself, I can’t hang out on the surface for long. I like to go deep.

In the Sound Healing Ceremony format, you can really achieve a sense of artistry in how you work with the medicine of Sound, that’s just not there in the other formats.
